Oratio ad sanctum Michael
Leone XIII

Sancte Michael Archangele,
defende nos in proelio;
contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium.
Imperet illi Deus,
supplices deprecamur:
tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis,
Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos,
qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo,
divina virtute, in infernum detrude.
+ Amen.
Prayer to St. Michael:

origins

This prayer was composed by Pope Leo XII (p. 1878-1903) following a dramatic vision on October 13, 1884. The pontiff himself reported that the content of the vision concerned the terrible battle fought between the Church and Satan. Immediately after this experience, the Pope composed this prayer, recited after every Holy Mass until Vatican Council II. The possibility of individual or community recitation on one's own initiative, in favor of the Church, as recommended also by Saint John Paul II in 1994, survives.
